Literary Travel - First stop / Viagem Literária - primeira paragem

I am so lucky that the first stop of the Literary Travel was scheduled for the town where I live!
Last week, a full theatre (who said literary events do not sell out in inland Portugal?) hosted two of my favourite authors: Chilean Luís Sepúlveda and Portuguese Valter Hugo Mãe (actually born in Angola, when it was still a Portuguese colony). For nearly two hours, we listened to the two authors talking about books, politics and life.
My favourite book from Valter is so far (I still have many to read) A Máquina de Fazer Espanhóis (of which I know only a Spanish translation: La Máquina de Hacer Españoles). From Luís Sepúlveda the choice is harder because I have read so many that really spoke to me. The Old Man who Read Love Stories is certainly one of them (which I learned last week that was based on his own experience of living 7 months with an Amazonian tribe), but so is Mundo del Fin del Mundo, Patagonia Express, or As Rosas de Atacama (again, I can't find an English translation).
This travel will continue, with many stops, all over the country, until 2016. You can check out if there will be any near you in this site!

Foi uma sorte a Viagem Literária ter início na cidade onde vivo. A primeira "paragem" teve casa cheia e recebeu dois dos meus autores preferidos: o chileno Luís Sepúlveda e o português (nascido em Angola) Valter Hugo Mãe. Foram cerca de duas horas a ouvi-los falar de livros, política e de episódios das suas vidas. Até ver (digo até ver, porque aida tenho muitos que ler) o livro do Valter Hugo Mãe de que mais gostei foi A Máquina de Fazer Espanhóis. Escolher um do Luís Sepúlveda é mais difícil porque foram já muitos aqueles que li e gostei mesmo muito. O Velho que Lia Romances de Amor é certamente um deles (que fiquei a saber neste encontro que se baseou na sua própria experiência de vida durante 7 meses com uma tribo da Amazónia), mas também o Mundo do Fim do Mundo (já não encontro a edição portuguesa à venda...), o Patagónia Express, ou As Rosas de Atacama.
Esta viagem vai continuar, com muitas paragens, por todo o país, até 2016. Podem consultar o programa aqui e ver se a vossa cidade é uma das felizes anfitriãs!

Dia Internacional da Mulher / International Women's Day

Após um interregno de quase três (!) anos, decidi retomar este blog. Na verdade, durante este intervalo de tempo, não deixei de ler. Pelo contrário, de acordo com o Goodreads , tenho até lido mais ultimamente. / After a nearly three (!) year gap, I decided to take up my blog again. Trata-se de Histórias de Mulheres , uma coletânea de pequenas biografias de mulheres que viveram em épocas distintas e com percursos de vida tão diferentes como Agatha Christie, Simone de Beauvoir, Frida Kahlo, ou as irmãs Bronte. Bedtime stories - to read or not to read them to your children / Histórias antes de deitar - sim ou não?

I have two children, aged 10 and 13 and I have been reading to them since they were babies. They have grown up watching me read whenever I have a spare moment: during breakfast, while waiting on lines, in the bathroom, while cooking (yes, it is possible and no, people don't usually complain about my cooking abilities...). My house is filled with books, in fact, there isn't a single room in the house where you can't find at least a few. I've been taking the children to the library since they were toddlers. They were both homeschooled until fourth grade and learned to read by themselves. Even after they became proficient readers, I never stopped reading to them whenever they asked me.
